    Collective wastecooking

4 days of trash, food and music

    Performance, Urban Intervention, Discussion

wastecooking's free supermarket is Vienna's first food shop in which everything is free. Included in the offer: waste-diving tours, a cooking campaign with food salvaged from the rubbish bin, and a tasty waste brunch. The only thing that is not given for free is personal responsibility.

"Eating is a political action!", says the well known Dutch protest cook and political activist Wam Kat. "For us, democracy begins at the stove!", say the Vienna performance-collective wastecooking. Anyone who is serious about reducing consumption needs alternatives to the system of conventional supermarkets.

Roughly a third to a half of all food produced ends up in the bin – waste cooking protests against this extravagance. With wastecooking's free supermarket a "free" food shop is opened, which is democratically organised and makes its own rules. The supermarket customers become accomplices, shopping becomes "diving" (in the collective Waste-Diving Tour), cooking becomes a subversive act and eating together becomes a liberating feast – political discussion and networking on the theme "shop differently, eat and live" inclusively.

wastecooking's free supermarket is an experimental laboratory in which social utopias can be cooked and savoured. wastecooking's free supermarket offer is aimed at all the hungry of this city, who are searching for special nourishment for body and soul. But beware: the cooking and eating of discarded foodstuffs can change your way of thinking! Ask your favourite waste-food diver or your cook about the risks and side effects. Food is culture ... don't waste it, cook it!
