Audio Tours Through the University of Vienna

    Gehörgänge

    Audio tours

Gehörgänge are throwing out critical questions on the occasion of the 650th anniversary celebrations of the University of Vienna. Guided audio tours depict precarious conditions at the university and tell of the fight for their elimination.

The University of Vienna is smugly celebrating its 650th anniversary and, on that occasion, cultivating a highly harmonious image. With slogans like "We ask the questions. Since 1365," the country's oldest University prides itself on its role in making a considerable contribution to society. However, how well does Austria's most important federal educational institution really fulfill this task?

In order to shed light upon these questions, Gehörgänge is inviting the audience to take part in audio tours being held in and around the university. Thereby, a look is taken behind the facade of the magnificent historical building located at Ringstrasse, being a representation of "pure" and "noble" science. Critical questions arise: How autonomous are research and teaching? Who decides what science is? What are the current working conditions in the field of science like? In addition to this, who generally has access to the university and what it offers?

At six locations, the audience will learn about precarious employment, commercialization, underfinancing, social exclusion and discrimination at the "Alma Mater Rudolphina." However, the audio material does not just portray the institution of the university as a place that reflects and produces social exclusion. After all, it is also the place of origin and a driver for emancipatory movements: Repeatedly, disputes concerning (social) co-determination and recognition, fair working conditions and the freedom of research and teaching are taking place here.

At select locations, protagonists are available for discussions. During the audio tours, the Gehörgänge team will be open to questions and for discussion.

Put in your earpieces, set on the headphones and you are on your way!
