A living archive and spoken resistance

    Nina Prader

    Discussion, workshops

With her "memory tool", MemoryGames, Nina Prader invites people of various ages to a dialogue in which personal as well as collective memories and perspectives with regard to history or historical knowledge are shared with one another.

How is it possible to remember the Shoah if the number of contemporary witnesses are continuously declining and the traces of history are increasingly fading for younger generations? MemoryGames is dedicated to this issue, wanting to serve as a "memory tool" that promotes active dialogical commemoration between people of various ages and with different experiences.

MemoryGames is made up of a set of cards that are "played with" in small groups within the scope of the workshop. However, in contrast to the classical memory game, having to do with uncovering a matching pair of pictures, in the case of MemoryGames, there are no identical pictures. On the contrary, it's abstract motifs act as media intended for the purpose of association: They want to encourage the participants to tell their own stories and enter into dialog in order to find mutual or shared stories. Consequently, the "game" mainly unfolds by way of speaking and telling: MemoryGames is a means of storytelling and making conversation in order to participate in a commemoration culture in a "playful" manner. The group discussions are led by educators, therapists, scholars and artists.

On the occasion of the WIENWOCHE, a new edition of MemoryGames, which was introduced for the first time in 2014, is going to be presented. Its motifs create a bridge between the story(ies) of resistance during the Nazi era and current topics of flight, asylum, migration and exile. MemoryGames is an exercise to create awareness for the connection between the past and the present and to take commemoration one step further.

Hosts: Nina Prader (artist), Ildiko Meny (doctor, curator of The Vienna Project), Birgit Koch (art therapist at Hemayat), Christina Wieder (teacher, historian), Nicole Theresa Raab (scientist, landscape architect)
