2016 marks the 50th anniversary of the recruitment agreement between Austria and the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRY). Back then, thousands of Yugoslav migrant workers came to Austria for an initially limited time. And stayed. The newly founded Platforma (Platform for Temporary Creation) takes the anniversary as an opportunity to spotlight the history as well as the political struggles of migrant labour – and making it visible.
Langer Weg der Gastarbajt leads from a former factory (now a cultural space) via a workers' association to migrant workers that have become local legends, as well as recreational places and bars, all of which are central points of collectivity and team spirit. We thus highlight relations between the local community and the people who have come to Austria and were subsequently labelled as ‘Gastarbeiter’. At all stations, a micro-programme of exhibitions, lectures, readings, films, performances, music and dance can be enjoyed. Stories of workers both ‘migratory and permanent’ will be told. Langer Weg der Gastarbajt brings together biographies and fragments right here and now. Experiences of precariousness and a collective historiography that are often otherwise excluded.
