VHZ 1896 - Legacies Of The Healing
A performative healing ritual intended to highlight Austria’s colonial past and raise awareness about the practice of exhibiting human beings in human zoos. The Vienna Human Zoo took place in the late 19th century on the grounds of the T(h)iergarten in the Wiener Prater.
Under the pan-African colors of the Black Liberation Flag, also known as the Marcus Garvey Flag, the protagonists will carry out a performance as an act of remembrance, resistance, strength and interconnectedness with those having a common African ancestry living across the globe – but also with the Brown and Indigenous peoples and diasporas from Abya Yala and Asia, who were just as affected by the Eurocentric worldview and domination, and who were/are subjected to similar subhuman treatment.
We come from a city that notoriously represses, forgets, and twists memories.
We are the descendants of those who opposed the cold, studious, piercing, and destructive gaze.
The fire of our ancestors burns in us and keeps the spirit of resistance alive. We resurrect the dead to remember that we are descendants of the past, and that we are the future.
We are the blood, the anger, the struggle, the love, the power and elegance, the sophistication, the rebellion, the mystery, the (zero) gravity, the nature, the healing, the hope, the rebirth, the spirituality and the transformation. We are pure, we are real, we are human.
We are the Legacies Of The Healing!
