BUNX
dripping in jelly of the black atlantic
This is a project engaging in the body to cultivate liberation, justice and connections to the cultural legacy of the Black Atlantic. Four Artists encounter each other through the dance form Twerk, tracing their diasporic heritages while diving into Embodied Activism. If Twerk rates as a provocation, it is as much an aesthetic and political one as an erotic one – disrupting class-inflected norms for gendered behaviour.
BUNX is a raw yet vulnerable dance performance, an embodied manifesto of black and brown liberated FLINTA* bodies. Being daring and caring with each other Andrea Vezga Acevedo, Iris Omari Ansong, mirabella paidamwoyo* dziruni and Yours Izundu hold a space that resists objectifications and normative gazes. They reclaim their sensual and sexual bodies moving between a club atmosphere and a ceremony.
Apart from the dance performances the collective facilitates two Open Labs to encourage participants onto their own journey of Embodied Activism. One Lab is exclusively open to BIPoC-FLINTA*/LGBTQIA+ and one Lab is open to all FLINTA*/LGBTQIA+. In the Open Labs participants dive into their bodies as the site of activism, exploring the practice and history of the dance form Twerk. All participants are invited to join a dance intervention following up the Open Labs - a flashmob to collectively reclaim public space despite the persistent risk of violence and assault of FLINTA* bodies. Let’s take the streets dancing, shaking, liberating!
