Bringing Nefertiti Home

Nora Al-Badri + Fantoplast

Cooperation

In 1912, a German excavation team discovered the famous limestone and stucco bust of Nefertiti in the ancient city of Akhet-Aton, near the Egyptian city of Amarna. Since it was first shown to the general public in 1923, it has been considered a showpiece of Germany's ancient Egyptian collections and has been on display at the Neues Museum Berlin since 2009. Before the outbreak of the Second World War and again afterwards, Egypt had spoken out in favour of the return of Nefertiti, but to no avail.

While the restitution dispute over the iconic bust continues, WIENWOCHE initiated a collaboration between the German-Iraqi artist Nora Al-Badri and FANTOPLAST as a proposal of a different way of ‘bringing Nefertiti home’. A 3D scan published by the artists Nora Al-Badri and Jan Nikolai Nelles is taken up by the interventional design team for upcycling of used plastic in order to create a mould of the sculpture at the Stand129.

Join us and see how plastic transforms into sculptures and bring Nefertiti home!
