WIENWOCHE
Memorial for the Rom*nja and Sinti*ze murdered under National Socialism
Intervention in public space
Nearly 75 years after the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp, there is still no central location in Austria for commemorating the genocide of the Rom*nja and Sinti*ze. A small plaque in Vienna’s Barankapark commemorates the Rom*nja and Sinti*ze deported from there in 1941. During National Socialism, more than 90% of the Austrian Rom*nja and Sinti*ze were murdered – nevertheless, the Roma Holocaust seems to be a nearly forgotten Holocaust. For years, Rom*nja activists in Austria have been fighting for a visible commemoration of these victims: for a day of commemoration. For an archive. For a memorial – for a monument in Vienna! Together with WIENWOCHE, this monument will be opened in the city center on the 13th of September. Artists and Roma activists make a demand for all of the memorial sites that should have been built by others long ago and exclaim loudly: “Dikh he na bister! Look and do not forget!”
